Why Montessori Method of Teaching

I am currently reading about the Montessori style of teaching. I have 3 books and have started in one of them and love it. I have been sending Reeghan to a charter school that teaches Montessori style this year and she and I have feel in love with it. It's there first year of the school and I have just seen great things in Reeghan and her desire to learn has improved.

One quote in the current book I am reading, "Teaching Montessori in the home, The Preschool Years" by Elizabeth Hainstock, sums up Montessori for me, "Education need not be imposed on the child; given a learning environment he will be free to act and to develop himself along the lines of his own inner direction. Thus Montessori felt that there must be freedom within the prepared environment to develop his physical, mental and spiritual growth. The young child is very hand-minded, and the materials are geared to his need to learn through movement, because it is movement that starts the intellect working. The true Montessori classroom is functionally arranged for the child, enabling him to work, move and develop freely. The room itself and all the furniture in it are proportioned to the child's size; his coat is hung on a low hook, and the materials are arranged on shelves that are easily accessible."

There you have it! I am excited to see how Paetan will do with it next year in Kindergarten. This book is great and I will be doing some things with Easton at home as well. I am all about creativity in learning and hands on experiments to help learn.
